Pay It Forward Project
The Pay It Forward Project provides women living at Our Lady’s Inn an opportunity to express their creativity through artistic jewelry design. It also is a chance for them to give back to the organization that is helping them build a better future. The project began in 2008 with local jewelry artists, Betsy Loudon of Chasing Rainbows, Fran Smith of Artistic Endeavors and Pamela Dake donating their time to teach jewelry making.
The women learn how to create necklaces, bracelets, earrings, rosaries and rosary bracelets. Most of the beads are donated by The St. Louis Bead Society and other friends of the jewelry designers. Many expensive and valuable beads are donated which makes these one-of-a-kind designs very special.
The Pay It Forward Project is truly a community effort. Volunteers from Stitches for Life and St. Cletus Parish make hand-made jewelry bags for each piece of jewelry sold.
The Pay it Forward Project also encompasses greeting card design. A group of women from the community instruct our women in creating unique hand-made cards.
These hand-made items are sold at Our Lady’s Inn events, with proceeds going to help fund the Our Lady’s Inn residential program.
The process of jewelry and card design is therapeutic for the women who participate in the project. They learn a new skill, tap into their creativity, and are encouraged by positive socialization. Most importantly, this program allows for the opportunity to “give back” to others who will need the services of Our Lady’s Inn in the future. The value of creating a small pair of earrings goes beyond its sale price; the moms and volunteers at Our Lady’s Inn are learning skills, gaining a sense of accomplishment and developing community.
How You Can Help
The Pay it Forward Project is a great way to share the mission of Our Lady’s Inn. If you are having an event, invite us to come and sell the jewelry. We go to fashion shows, women’s events, community events, art shows or private parties.
There is always a need for supplies to sustain this project so consider donating to support the project.
